Midden in de burgeroorlog heeft Lassiter een plan om de controle over Californië te krijgen. Hij werkt vanuit St. Joseph en is van plan via Pony Express valse berichten naar de troepen aan de westkust te sturen. Eerst probeert hij Pony Express-ritje Roy Rogers om te kopen. Als Roy weigert, wendt hij zich tot de outlaw Johnson en zijn bende en dit leidt tot problemen.
