Halverwege de jaren tachtig hadden de legendarische animatiestudio's van Walt Disney moeilijke tijden doorgemaakt. De kunstenaars waren gepolariseerd tussen nieuwkomers die hongerig waren naar innovatie en oldtimers die nog niet klaar waren om de controle uit handen te geven. Deze omstandigheden zorgden voor een reeks box-office-flops en pessimistische voorspellingen: misschien waren de beste dagen van de animatie voorbij. Misschien kon het het publiek niets schelen. Alleen een wonder of een magische spreuk kan een gelukkig einde teweegbrengen. Waking Sleeping Beauty is geen sprookje.
