De Tsjechische schilder en illustrator Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) behoort tot de pioniers van de art nouveau-beweging aan het einde van de 19e eeuw. Vrijwel van de ene op de andere dag wordt hij beroemd in Parijs dankzij de posters die hij ontwerpt om de toneelstukken van actrice Sarah Bernhardt aan te kondigen. Maar op het hoogtepunt van zijn roem besluit Mucha Parijs te verlaten om zijn levensproject te realiseren.
